Candy Recipe – Put the water from a ‘full to the brim’ 1lb honey jar into a saucepan. Heat the saucepan and slowly add 2kg of white granulated sugar stirring constantly. When the mixture has come to the boil – turn off the heat and leave for a few minutes. A crust will start to form on the top of the mixture. Start stirring until the mixture begins to thicken and turn a milky colour. Pour out into 3 x clean 500gr margarine tubs or similar clean containers. Keep the candy in a cool dry place with a lid on.
When you put it on the cover board hole, it is suggested that you put a couple of twigs underneath the candy (not the actual container) in case the candy drops down and crushes the bees.
You will also need an eke (such as an empty super) to ensure that the roof is secure and does not come off! The Apiary Manager has used this method for some years and it works very well.
CAUTION: Molten candy is very hot and can burn you, so make sure you take all necessary precautions to protect your eyes and bare flesh etc. Best done when the kids, dogs, etc are out!
