Stores shortage warning

In some areas beekeepers have reported shortages of food stores in their hives. It is advised therefore that you check your colonies have adequate stores by hefting and add supplements if required. With the weather being cold, fondant is the best option rather than liquid feed.

This is also a good time to check for Varroa and we remind you to only use approved products in the recommended manner.

Further information about colony feeding, Varroa control and keeping good medicine records can be found on the NBU website at www.nationalbeeunit.com

PBKA Membership renewals

Just to remind you that membership renewal is now overdue. It is important to note that your BDI comes into force 40 days after payment so if you haven’t yet renewed and to ensure continuity of cover as well as access to PBKA activities, please complete and return the 2018-pbka-membership-form as soon as possible.

New Apiary required – urgently!

As members will know, the Beginners training has been carried out at Kethins Farm, Haverfordwest for many years. Unfortunately, the owner has decided to renovate the farm buildings to be more commercial in nature and has asked the PBKA to vacate the place as soon as possible.

This is a big blow and we now need to quickly identify an alternative location to carry on this valuable service for new members.

The basic requirement is for sufficient and suitable space for a dozen hives, enough parking for a dozen or so cars and preferably a shed or outbuilding for storage of equipment and for somewhere to sit and discuss all things bee related.

If any member has, or knows, of a potentially suitable site then please give the Chairman, Jerry Percy a ring on 01437 751357.
