Checking hives in the Autumn!🐝

Hi fellow beekeepers , I have recently given my bees a final pre-winter check. Even after being fed 12L of syrup a few weeks ago, there are very little stores, there is Ivy pollen and nectar, but the honey may be unusable for the bees, I have fed fondant and rapid feeder again, the bees were looking for the syrup but the temperature was only 13 degrees. My message is …don’t assume there is enough food in the hives, if the bees can’t use the ivy honey they will starve. Stock up with fondant and feed as required. Good luck everyone.

PBKA Honey Show – Sunday 24th November 2024

We are pleased to announce that the PBKA will once again be running its Honey Show for PBKA members, on Sunday 24th November 2024.

The event will once again be held at ‘The Green Barn’ at Scolton Manor.

Please note that this year we have refined the schedule to introduce additional categories and made the entry requirements less onerous, in order to encourage PBKA members and make it a more inclusive, ‘fun’ event at all levels and ages.

We are very keen to encourage as many entrants as possible, so please have a look at the Schedule for the PBKA Honey Show 2024 (3) to consider what categories you might like to enter.

Note that we have a special category for beginners (Novice Class) and as well as some new categories this year, such as Honey Fudge, a Children’s Category, and an ‘Interesting or ingenious piece of beekeeping related equipment’ category. Again, as last year, we have a fun ‘Bad Beekeeper of the Year’ award, (which I should win easily this year, according to the Committee!!!).

Note that we intend having a combined social event and prize giving in the New Year 2025, which will be open to all PBKA members and their families!

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Sunday 24th November and refreshments will be available free of charge.

Any enquiries in the meantime, please come back to me at pbkaapiarymanager@live.co.uk

Very best regards to you all

Paul
