Ancient Egyptian Beekeeping Webinar – Tueday 1st November

Next in our winter series of webinars we explore the fascinating world of bees and Egyptology with Professor Gene Kritsky. On Tuesday the 1st of November at 7.30pm, he will unravel the mysteries of ancient Egyptian beekeeping and discuss his book ‘The Tears of Re’.

Prof Kritsky is the dean of Behavioural and Natural Sciences and Professor of the Department of Biology at Mount St. Joseph University, Ohio. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Entomology from the University of Illinois, as well as a B.A. in Biology from Indiana University. Professor Kritsky serves as editor of American Entomologist and has published several books and more than 100 papers on insect evolution, beekeeping history, Egyptology, and Charles Darwin.

The National Honey Show is held over 3 days in October at Sandown Park Racecourse. It is the UK’s premier honey show with International Classes, Lectures and Workshops. Bob will give a brief history of this prestigious show as it approaches its centenary, with some tales from behind the scenes.

Bob has been a beekeeper for over 20 years. He has an interest in microscopy and has written a book about simple microscopy for beekeepers. He is a Master Beekeeper and currently Chair of Surrey Beekeepers Association and Chair of BeeCraft Magazine.

Bob has been Chair of the National Honey Show since 2013, although he has worked on the show for most of his time as a beekeeper. He is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers (a sponsor of the National Honey Show).

Pollen Microscopy Workshop

The WBKA is running a 1-day Pollen Microscopy workshop for WBKA members in Devil’s Bridge near Aberystwyth on Sunday 22 May.  Here is the link for further information and to book:

There are 2 ticket types available – one for those who wish to use a WBKA microscope, and one for those who can bring their own compound microscope.  If you decide to enrol, please ensure that you book the correct ticket type according to whether or not you are bringing your own microscope as spare equipment won’t be available.

This is the first regional microscopy workshop to be run but the WBKS plans to run them in other locations going forward.

Foraging is essential for honey bees and provides their food supplies of nectar and pollen. Forage sources for honey bees are an important consideration for beekeepers, especially when siting apiaries. This talk looks at the nutritional needs of bees, colony requirements and important sources of forage, as well as looking at the bees’ foraging strategies.

Lynne has kept bees for over 30 years, and runs 25 – 30 colonies in Somerset. She is a Master Beekeeper, has recently gained the National Diploma in Beekeeping, (NDB), and is an examiner for the modules and practical assessments. Lynne is heavily involved in educating beekeepers in Somerset, now running study groups via Zoom, and curating the popular Somerset Lockdown Lecture series.
