Stewards are sought for the WBKA stand at the Royal Welsh Show, July 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th. Each stewarding slot gains you free entry to the show. If you are willing to steward please respond to convention@wbka.com stating which day(s) you are able to support and whether you can be there early to cover the first shift that starts at 9 am. Slots last for 3 hours where you will be there to talk to members of the public about beekeeping and all things bee related.

The stand is situated in the South Glamorgan Hall next to the National Welsh Honey Show.

Starvation warning from WBKA!

Dear Beekeepers

Our Regional Bee Inspector, Dan Baxter has asked me to forward the article below on starving bees to all contacts in Wales. With the cooler temperatures and inclement weather starvation is being observed across Wales by the inspectorate and supplementary feeding may be recommended to minimise colony losses.  I am also getting reports from Association secretaries about colony losses due to starvation and there is no promise of better weather in the near future.

Dr Sarah Bunker has a PhD in insect flight from Exeter University, and also keeps bees in Devon. In 2018 she travelled to Jersey with other SW beekeepers to learn about the yellow-legged hornet and how to find their nests by tracking. Arriving home, she decided to write a book about what she had learned, and what was known about this fascinating insect. This year she produced the second edition of that book, largely re-written due to the explosion in scientific articles about this invasive species.

WBKA webinar – Why do bees swarm, and swarm, and swarm? – Helen Tworkowski

Helen Tworkowski has been keeping bees in West Devon for more than 20 years. She has now retired from a career in social care, although she started out in science. She now finds herself busier than ever learning about not only honey bees, but the threats and opportunities in a changing landscape.
Helen’s talk looks at nepotism and the mechanism for creating after swarms or casts. It is aimed at beekeepers who understand the basics of swarming but want to know more.
