Open Day at the new Pembrokeshire Beekeeping Centre

Come and see the PBKA’s new ‘Pembrokeshire Beekeeping Centre’ at Scolton Manor’s  ‘Open Day’ on Saturday 19th July and as part of National Countryside Week.

There will be hive inspection displays at the ‘Pine Tree Apiary’, plus honey extracting in the ‘Honey Kitchen’ for all to see!

In addition, the new ‘Bee Hive’ exhibition room will be open, which includes live pictures from our ‘bee cam’!

On Friday 18th July, the Centre, together with Scolton Manor’s Victorian Walled Garden project will be officially opened by Edwina Hart, MBE, C St J, AM – the Minister for Economy, Science and Transport.

And on Sunday at 2pm we have an apiary meeting for PBKA members, so it is going to be a busy weekend for the beekeeping team at the Pembrokeshire Beekeeping Centre!

We hope to see you there!

Final Apiary Meeting for 2013 Season

PBKA members please note that the final apiary meeting for the 2013 season will be held in the Honey Kitchen at Scolton Manor on Sunday 15th September at 2pm.

The weather forecast is looking poor for Sunday, so we will probably be inside and reflecting on the 2013 season. What went well – what didn’t, the lessons we have learned and what you would like to see the association do for you and beekeeping in Pembrokeshire in the future!

We look forward to seeing you then!

Apiary Manager

Successful ‘Honey Kitchen’ demonstration

A very successful demonstration of honey extracting took place at the new Honey Kitchen at Scolton Manor on Sunday afternoon watched by over 70 people who crammed into the exhibition and extracting room. Paul Eades, the Apiary Manager, uncapped the frames, while John Dudman loaded the extractor and gave a running commentary to various groups, consisting of PBKA members and the public, who came in to watch the fun!

Lots of questions were asked by the observers present, and staff at Scolton Manor have indicated that an enormous amount of interest has been generated since the facility first opened in July. It is planned to do further demonstrations during the rest of this season (dates to be finalised) in order to build on this.

The Honey Kitchen is a commercial standard honey processing facility, which will be used for hygienically extracting and bottling association honey in accordance with Environmental Health regulations, as well as for training PBKA members and public demonstration.

PBKA members wishing to extract their own honey, can of course continue to hire the association extractor from the Apiary Manager by arrangement.
